Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is like an electrical "brown out" that develops as energy production in certain brain cells begins to fail. Using nutritional tools makes it possible to resuscitate mitochondrial energy production and either stabilize or improve symptoms. Drugs are of known minimal value and they also have plenty of side effects. Lifestyle strategies such as mental and physical exercise can delay or prevent the onset of AD  and should always be part of an AD treatment regimen. It is also important ot know that there are many prescription medications that are "anti-cholinergic" that are discussed in the videos that can aggravate symptoms and should be avoided.

ADD/ADHD

ADD and ADHD are common diagnoses that now are reported to affect at least 5% of our children and many of these kids suffer from family or other social dysfunction that masquerade as these conditions. It is important to support our children with psychotherapy and general and targeted nutrition. While optimal nutrition with whole, unprocessed, unrefined foods without additives and preservatives is critical, there are specific essential fatty acids that are critical to replace to avoid biochemical defects that not only lead to the commonly appreciated symptoms of these conditions but also to the commonly under-appreciated findings that include dyslexia, dyspraxia, night blindness and dry skin. Obtaining an essential fatty acid profile is a good idea for everyone who has one of these diagnoses.

Autoimmunity

There is an epidemic of autoimmune diseases that include hay fever, asthma, diabetes, collagen vascular diseases, and hypothyroidism. The causes of this epidemic range from heavy metal toxicity to drugs and environmental toxins. Our immune system attacks our tissues and we use drugs to suppress our immune system. There are other options for treatment that relate to GI immunity (leaky gut syndrome), lowering the antigenic load (discussed), preserving a high antioxidant load, balancing pH, and supporting a healthy lifestyle.

Cancer

The definition of cancer means that cancer cells don't die as they are programmed, they lack apoptosis. The reasons for this range from genetic defects to overgrowth of chromosomes. Cancer is believed to be caused by genetic and epigenetic factors that include poor lifestyle, radiation exposure, infections, pollution, and more. The spread of cancer is complicated; it is not haphazard.

Combining mainsteam and alternative strategies provides the best outcomes, but is rarely available. Diet, exercise, sleep, stress, and weight have a powerful effect on whether or not you'll get cancer.

Depression

There is an epidemic of anxiety and depression. Today's world is filled with emotional challenge. How many families do you know that aren't dysfunctional? And who do you know that has not spent time with a counselor, psychologist, or psychiatrist at some time in their life? In some circles it is almost a status symbol to be in psychotherapy! And, it is not unusual to be in therapy for years. We keep our trusted therapists very busy!

We have a wide range of possible therapies to treat the anxiety, depression, panic attacks, insomnia, etc. that affects most of us at some time in our lives. There is regular mainstream treatment where insight psychotherapy is the central focus. Then there are a whole variety of strategies that include psychoanalysis, hypnotherapy, applied kinesiology (such as EFT and EMDR), 12-step programs, biofeedback, neurofeedback, breath work, qigong, Huna therapy, crystal therapy, and so much more!

Heart Conditions

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world. In the US alone, there are about 600,000 deaths annually and millions who have severe disabilities from its manifestations. Heart attacks are preventable. One hundred years ago they were rare! Lifestyle is the most imporant treatment to prevent and manage heart disease.

Yet it is a partnership between the mainstream of medicine and preventive lifestyle-based strategies that offers the best solution for this problem.

This series of videos offers an introductory overview on what you should know to prevent, restore, and maintain good heart health.

Heart Conditions

Hypertension

Hypertension is caused most of the time by lifestyle habits that can be improved to make a major difference in your blood pressure. Mainstream medicine looks to the quick fix with an array of anti-hypertensive drugs that can work, but at the price of a multitude of known and unknown side effects that can be disabling or even lifethreatening. Most people with hypertension can get off of their drugs if they will adopt a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Saputo recommends getting started with lifestyle, dietary changes, and supplements to start the process of lowering your blood pressure.

Insomnia

Sleep is one of the most important lifestyle factors. Prolonged insomnia leads to inflammation and a whole host of illnesses that include hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, overweight, and suppressed immunity. There are hormonal imbalances as well, that include insulin, leptin, ghrelin, adrenal hormones and neurotransmitters that cause profound physiological changes. Sleeping pills never deal with the underlying problem and should not be more than very short term. Sleep apnea is also reviewed.

Pain and Inflammation

Few of us are free of chronic pain and inflammation. We tend to rely on pharmaceutical drugs to relieve our symptoms, but this does little in the long run, and inhibits the healing process in the short term. Lifestyle medicine is the key to resolving inflammation and pain. Dr. Saputo recommends the lifestyle, dietary, and supplements listed below to support the body's natural and innate healing process.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is nearly always a preventable disease and is usually reversible using lifestyle strategies by themselves. There are dozens of medications available to treat elevated blood sugar levels, but nearly all of them have common potentially serious "side effects." There are also a wide range of nutritional supplements that are equally effective and far safer that will be reviewed.

The importance of a low carbohydrate diet, stress reduction, regular exercise, getting 8 hours of sleep at night, avoiding toxic chemicals, managing weight, and having meaningful purpose in life are the keys to successful treatment.

Weight Management

There is a new movement in the weight management field that is more accepting of whatever weight a person is, and focuses more on lifestyle measures that reduce inflammation through a healthy diet, improved fitness, better sleep, reduced stress, and less exposure to environmental toxins. This is a win-win approach as research verifies that a healthy lifestyle is more important than what you weigh, and that you can live a long and healthy life even if you are overweight. in fact, being a little overweight is associated with a longer life!

Taking the whole person into consideration when looking at what he or she weighs is of major importance. Quality of life issues that include self esteem and self confidence may be far more important than what a person weighs. In some situations, being overweight confers a longer life!
