Cholesterol: Are You Confused?

Total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and their interrelationships and differences are discussed so that a fundamental understanding of what cholesterol is and what the ratios of the various subcategories means. High total cholesterol is not necessarily a dangerous thing...it is the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL that is the most predictive factor. The value and dangers of statins are reviewed. Lowering LDL cholesterol beyond a certain point may lower the risk for heart attack but the all cause mortality goes up as LDL is lowered beyond a certain point. Lifestyle measures are the most potent in lowering inflammation and encouraging healthy cholesterol ratios. Nutritional supplements that lower cholesterol are also reviewed.
