Angina is the pain caused by insufficient blood flow to an area of the heart. While this is not lethal in itself, it can be very painful and disabling, and is also a warning that there is at least one blood vessel that is severely blocked and in danger of closing off entirely. A myocardial infarction may be impending. Dr. Saputo recommends the following...

Low dose aspirin can lower the risk of heart attacks in people without a history of heart disease by about 20%, but it does not lower the death rate or the risk of stroke. Also, there is the added risk of GI bleeding secondary to aspirin use. The risk for getting a heart attack in primary prevention is lowered from 2.3% to 1.8%, which comes to a 20% lower risk...

Aspirin is not a good idea for women trying to stave off heart attacks or strokes. Seniors who take daily aspirin have twice the risk for wet macular degeneration (not for the dry form). The risk increases from 2 cases per 100 people to 4 cases per 100 people. The authors stated that they felt the benefits of fewer heart attacks and strokes outweighed the visual issues. However, no mention of other forms of anticoagulation were considered such...

Most angioplasties and stents used to treat acute heart attacks or unstable angina in the US are necessary and lifesaving. We know that these procedures are not indicated for people with coronary artery blockages who are stable; only about 3% benefit from these invasive procedures compared to medical treatment alone using pharmaceutical drugs. There is also a...

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are absolutely necessary for life. Sources are from fish, fish oil, krill, flax and oils from other seeds, nuts, and plants. There is an epidemic of essential fatty acid deficiencies in the US. Infant formulas have been deficient in EFAs; we can add fish oil and evening primrose oil to it. EFAs thin blood, prevent rhythm...

Fish oil supplementation is the rule in Europe CCUs and hardly used in the US. The values of essential fatty acids are reviewed. It is far superior to aspirin for anticoagulation because of its saftey profile. We need comparative studies in a clinical trial.

Fish oil and flax seed oil are both excellent sources of omega 3 fatty acids. Not everyone can convert what is in flax to the active omega 3 and 6 oils that we need. Fish oil is easily contaminated by heavy metals.

Dr. Len and Nurse Vicki review the importance of essential fatty acids for brain function and encourage eating fish to correct the problem. They report the effects of adding fish to the diet of prisoners and encourage that we serve both prisonsers and school children more fish in their diets. Research supporting this premise is presented.
