The chemistry of diabetes is discussed. Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are autoimmune diseases and we're now learning about the specific chemicals that lead to this state. Leaky membranes and hyperacidity explain much of why diabetes develops. High levels of sugar are toxic to body proteins. High insulin levels and metabolic syndrome are also reviewed.

An old osteoporosis drug, Aredia, may be effective in killing a range of influenza viruses that include the swine and bird flu. In the June 2011 issue of the Journal of Experimental Medicine, researchers showed that Aredia stimulated gamma-delta T-cells to reproduce and also kill influenza viruses. Rather than killling the virus directly, it does so through the...

The 2009 H1N1 swine flu epidemic deaths in children were more related to MRSA than the virus itself. Simultaneous infection of MRSA and H1N1 increased mortality by 8 fold! Only 30% of children in ICU with swine flu did not have a co-existing serious disease. Of those, only 9% died. The potential value of the swine flu vaccine would not save many lives....

High dose, but not low dose, zinc lozenges shorten the duration of cold symptoms. A review of all previous studies on the topic showed that the reason why some showed no benefit is because the dosage used matters. It takes at least 75 mg of zinc acetate or gluconate for it to work (glycinate and citrate forms of zinc do not work). Daily doses exceeding...

Consuming cruciferous vetetables after a diagnosis of breast cancer was associated with improved survival in Chinese women, as reported in the Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival Study in April 2012. This is a test of immune memory in lymphocytes that lead to hyperimmune reactions. It measures the body's reactivity to chemicals in the environment. It measures delayed hypersensitivity reactions that are rarely measured in clinical practice. These are direct lymphocyte reactions to antigens in the environment.

There are a lot of myths about food inducing arthritis...or are they? One of the best kept secrets in medicine is the leaky gut syndrome. In this situation the pores of the small intesting are too big and they let large molecules that normally cannot traverse this membrane come across and into the body. Because 60% + of all our immune cells are located in this...

A study from the Mayo Clinic published in the PloS ONE in June of 2012 showed that the gut microflora regulate the immune system and may be directly related to autoimmune disorders such as ulcerative colitis, and diabetes. In fact, the gut microbiome may be used as a biomarker for this predisposition and it may be possible to prevent autoimmune diseases...

High-dose, but not low dose, zinc lozenges shorten the duration of the common cold. Daily doses greater than 75 mg showed a 42% reduction in duration of colds. The forms of zinc working the best are acetate and glycinate. Zinc acts as an antifhinoviral agent, inducer of interferon (prevents viruses from entering cells), and immune booster.

We know that too little vitamin D is not healthy, but how about too much? Until recently, it has been believed that megadoses of vitamin D might not be a good idea, but that it was relatively harmless. However, a study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism looked at 250,000 people from Denmark showing that levels below 20 nmol are...

The discovery of a "new" protein, EP67, that can activate the immune system within 2 hours, is being celebrated as a secret way to help the immune system fight influenza viruses in the June issue of the July issue of the Public Library of Science journal. Its primary use has been as an adjuvant in vaccines. It makes one wonder how much benefit...

Low dose naltrexone (LDN) has been implicated to help with cancer, HIV/AIDS, autoimmune diseases, and much more. Now it has been shown to have a potent antitumor effect on human ovarian cancer in both tissue culture and in animal xenografts. Naltrexone (NTX) is a general opioid receptor antagonist that results in compensatory elevation in endogenous opioids and...

Chronic disease, degenerative or autoimmune disease we talk about repair deficiency and inflammation. We measure inflammatory factors to determine how much disease is present. If cholesterol is healthy and not oxidized it is good; we need it to make hormones, vitamin D, and cell membranes. We need to measure oxidized forms of cholesterol and other fats. It is...
