An article in Nature Medicine in March of 2012 showed that changes in the commensal microbes in the gut or antibiotic treatment predispose people to systemic allergic diseases. The microflora of the gut is composed of thousands of microbial species microbes that live in a complex ecosystem. When this is disturbed it is dangerous and can lead to a wide range of intestinal disorders. Probiotics are the natural microbes found in the gut and they can be replaced.
