POST STROKE: Nutritional Support Protocol

submitted by: admin on 11/26/2013

The cause of most strokes is the result of interrupted blood flow to the brain from plaque, clots, and bleeding. Transient ischemic attacks are often the warning of an impending stroke and they are a medical emergency. It is critical to maintain a normal blood pressure. The best treatment to prevent a stroke is a healthy lifestyle. There are a number of supplements that support healthy brain function and can restore circulation and normal blood thickness (hypercoagulation).

*Dr. Saputo recommends the Lifestyle, Dietary, and Supplement protocols listed below as considerations for treatment for Strokes. POST STROKE: Nutritional Support Protocol

Lifestyle Recommendations:

  1. Practice good sleep habits and get between 8-9 hours of sleep a night. Take Dr. Saputo's Insomnia Assessment and follow the Insomnia Nutritional Suppot Protocol if Needed

  2. Participate in a regular balanced exercise program that includes wearing a pedometer to ensure that you collect steps and move more. High intensity short bursts (20-60 seconds) of activity during the day is recommended to enhance growth hormone release. Also engage in resistance training that works all major muscle groups (work each group at least 2 times a week).

  3. Engage in mental exercise by consistently learning new skills and information.

  4. Avoid exposure to chemicals including skin care and hair care products such as GrecianFormula

(contains lead), lipstick (contains aluminum), deodorant (aluminum), toxic cleaning products and

    artist’s paints.

  5. Build positive relationships in your life; practice clear communication, cooperation and forgiveness.

  6. Dr. Saputo also recommendes that you take our Stress and Anxiety Assessment

  2. Emphasize omega 3 fatty acids (salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines) and omega 9 fats (olive oil, olives, almonds, hazelnuts, avocados, macadamia oil and coconut oil).

  3. Eat 5-9 servings off fresh fruits and vegetables daily.

  4. Substitute complex carbohydrates (non-starchy vegetables and whole grains) for refined and simple carbohydrates. Eliminate refined carbohydrates from the diet (this includes bread, cereal or pasta made with white flour, white rice, bagels, sugar, corn syrup, honey and candy).

  5. Limit or avoid trans fatty acids (hydrogenated vegetable oil, margarine and shortening). Cook with olive oil at a low heat.

  6. Drink at least 64 ounces of filtered, bottled or non-chlorinated water everyday. In addition, drink 2-3 cups of naturally decaffeinated green tea daily.

  7. Avoid or limit caffeine, alcohol and other potentially neurotoxic compounds like aspartame and MSG.

Cutting Edge Treatment for Stroke

While having a stroke can be devastating, there are cutting edge strategies that can help a lot more than conventional medical practice that includes physical therapy, anticoagulation, and sometimes surgery. Most strokes are caused by clots from arteriosclerosis or atrial fibrillation or hemorrhage into the brain, but stroke-like conditions such as head trauma, tumors, or prolonged epilepsy can cause similar symptoms.

Cutting edge therapies include acupuncture, neurofeedback, transcranial DC stimulation, infrared light therapy, live blood cell analysis, and special nutritional protocols that include coconut oil, curcumin, choline, niacinamide, B12, and essential fatty acids. And, of course, lifestyle strategies are also very powerful healing tools.

It is also important to avoid all drugs, but in particular sedatives, sleeping pills, antidepressants, antihistamines, and anticholinergic blockers.
