Brisk Walking Helps Prostate Cancer

submitted by: admin on 02/17/2015
Men with prostate cancer that is localized to the prostate can improve their outcomes if they walk briskly for at least 3 hours a week. This high-intensity exercise delayed and possibly even prevented the progression of their disease as they were found to have a 57% lower rate of progression of disease than men walking at a slower pace. They also found that brisk...

Can Supplements Cause Cancer?

submitted by: admin on 09/19/2013
In previous studies it has been shown that certain vitamins and minerals can lower the risk of prostate cancer. Now a study shows that vitamin E at 400 IU/day for several years actually increased the risk of prostate cancer by 17%. We tend to assume that supplements are entirely safe when the data is not in. This thinking is no different from big...

Digitalis May be a Treatment for Cancer

submitted by: admin on 09/19/2013
Recent studies on prostate cancer show that digoxin may not only slow cancer growth but also induce apoptosis. Studies in the early 1900s on breast cancer showed that people on digitalis rarely have cancer progress or lead to death. This rather startling information has not made it into mainstream medicine and for the most part digitalis is not used...

Exercise Reduces the Effect of an Obesity Gene

submitted by: admin on 09/21/2013
Physical exercise can change the DNA in certain genes that stimulate obesity and lessen their effects by about 30%. Epigenetics has a lot to do with how the DNA in our genes manifests itself. This challenges the widely held belief that what is in our DNA is not changeable...thank goodness that this is not true. We have found the same epigenetic...

Is Surgery the Best Treatment for Localized Prostate Cancer?

submitted by: admin on 06/30/2016
For men with localized prostate cancer, surgery does not save lives and it has a much higher rate of complications such as impotence and incontenance. However, once a man knows he has prostate cancer, he has a powerful drive to get it out even if the data does not support this approach. The word, "cancer" scares us. We need much better...

Lifestyle Modifies Your DNA

submitted by: admin on 02/19/2015
The field of epigenetics is exploding. We now know that DNA changes in response to environmental exposures and causes major changes in gene expressivity. It is well known that prostate cancer genes (oncogenes) are turned on and off by diet, exercise, relation, sleep, meditation and more. The work of Dean Ornish, MD on prostate cancer proved this. We now have...

Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Prostate Cancer

submitted by: admin on 10/12/2013
Diets high in essential fatty acids reduce the malignancy of prostate cancer. Eating fish 1-2 times a week is sufficient. Both fish oil and flax seed oil are effective most of the time. Mercury contamination is discussed.

Preventive Benefits of Medicare

submitted by: admin on 10/14/2013
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reports that 5 million Americans took advantage of one or more of the recommended preventive benefits available through the Affordable Care Act. Among the  benefits is the new Annual Wellness Visit benefit. The idea is to either detect early or prevent chronic diseases with tests such as mammograms, bone...

Prostate Cancer and Lifestyle

submitted by: admin on 06/30/2016
Lifestyle has been shown to be a powerful way to change cancer genes. Dean Ornish did studies that are discussed. Flax seed oil, vitamin D deficiency, and exposure to environmental toxins are also reviewed.

Prostate Cancer Overview

submitted by: admin on 06/30/2016
The PSA era is over. Modern research has shown that it leads to overdiagnosis and overtreatment and far too many surgeries, radiation therapy, and hormonal therapy. Prostate cancer is very common, but only about 2% need to be treated. Preventive measures and environmental toxins are reviewed. The relationship of various hormones is discussed.New tools...

Prostate Cancer with Dr. Richard Kunin

submitted by: admin on 10/14/2013
Dr. Len and Dr. Kunin talk about prostate cancer and some manifestations of it.  There have been big changes in how we look at prostate cancer in the last several years.  The whole era of the PSA test is now over according to Thomas Stamey, the inventor of the test.  We have now gotten to a situation where we are over treating most men who have...

Prostate Cancer: Who Needs Treatment?

submitted by: admin on 10/14/2013

PSA Screening

submitted by: admin on 06/18/2016
The inventor of the PSA test as come out and stated that the PSA era is over. We are over-diagnosing too many prostate cancers that don't need treatment with the test. There is no good prostate screening test today. The PSA test is good for following known prostate cancers as they are a good measurement of the extent of growth of the cancer.

PSA Velocity

submitted by: admin on 11/22/2024
Should PSA screening be removed from prostate cancer guidelines? Some researchers have found that a change of PSA levels over time is a poor predictor of prostate cancer and may lead to many unnecessary biopsies.

Radical Healthcare Reform and the Future of Medicine

submitted by: admin on 11/22/2024
Health care reform (HCR) is a necessity, but little true HCR is on the table for either Democrats or Republicans. Republicans want to privatize or abolish Medicare and Democrats want to increase taxes to fund skyrocketing health care costs. Neither approach represents HCR; they merely address how the present health care system might be sustained. Dean...

Screening Does Not Reduce Prostate Cancer Deaths

submitted by: admin on 10/14/2013
Screening does not significantly reduce prostate cancer deaths but it does lead to overdetection and overtreatment. The cancer detection rate is 40% higher with testing, but to prevent one death from prostate cancer more than 1400 men would need screening and 48 would be unnecessarily treated. The era of the PSA is over.

Should Screening Tests for Cancer be Limited in the Elderly?

submitted by: admin on 09/01/2014
A study out of the University of North Carolina Medical Center in August of 2014 studied more than 27,000 patients over the age of 65 and questioned the widsom of doing routine cancer screening tests, especially if they had a limited life expectancy. They looked at screening tests for prostate, breast, colon, and cervix in a study from 2000 through 2010 and compared...
