The Patient Protection Affordable Care Act, known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or "Obamacare," became law in March of 2010 is is the topic of considerable confusion. To begin with it is nearly 2700 pages long and is written in complex legal terminology that few understand; this includes, believe it or not, most of the US Congress!
The ACA is supposed to protect patients against unfair insurance company practices, provide greater access for health care, rein in out-of-control health care costs, add more consumer benefits and protection, and make health care more affordable. It does all these things, but the devil is in the details. Truly, it is controversial, but it is a start and it will be mandatory to have health insurance starting in January of 2014. We'll soon see what the ACA will bring. California is the first real test of what the ACA will mean.
