Dr. Len and Nurse Vicki present everything you need to know about cholesterol. What it is, what the fractions mean, what they predict, and what we can do to deal with elevated levels. Statins, how they work, what they do, and their side effects are reviewed. The role of inflammation, oxidized cholesterol, and why it should not be lowered too much are explained....

Most of us assume the colonoscopy is a routine screening test we all need at age 50. However, the data is controversial and it can be argued that for people who are asymptomatic that there's no benefit when complications are considered.

Aspirin is not a good idea for women trying to stave off heart attacks or strokes. Fifty women would have to take ASA for 10 years to help just one person, and this would only be for women at risk for a heart attack. For a person who has already had a heart attack or stroke, the evidence shows there is some benefit to taking aspirin, but it is not...

Without cholesterol we could not survive. Low levels are dangerous and too often we overdo statin usage. What we need to know about cholesterol to make intelligent decisions about how to manage it are discussed. Inflammation is considered.

Big pharma uses third world countries to test their drugs on. They do this because it is cheaper and they have far more latitude in taking risks with those people who agree to participating in the clinical trials. The WHO should step up to the plate to monitor these experiments, but so far this has not happened. When people are harmed by the trials, this process...

Exercise reduces our risk of dying from heart attacks by at least 40%. More TV and less exercise leads to obesity and all of its complications. Sports are a great way to do the movement we like and stay fit. The mechanism of plaque formation and inflammation is explained. Exercise benefits angina, congestive heart failure, and abnormal rhythms.

Cholesterol is related to but not the direct cause of arteriosclerosis, heart disease, and strokes. We cannot live without cholesterol, we must have it to make cell membranes, vitamin D, many hormones, and bile salts. Yet it is related to heart disease. In general, the higher the cholesterol the worse the risk for heart disease. But it is not the total that is...

How low should cholesterol be lowered? Vytorin is a drug that contains both Zocor and Zetia and lowers cholesterol very powerfully. Most cardiologists believed this is really beneficial because the risk for heart attack goes down substantially. However, when a study was done on this and looked at all cause mortality, it was probably slightly increased!
Cholesterol...

The Journal of the National Cancer Institute published an article saying that colonoscopy for primary screening might be going too far. I agree! The benefits, harms, and costs have not been determined. Checking the stool for ocult blood and flexible sigmoidoscopy have been shown to be of value but there's no data showing that colonoscopy gives additional...

President Barack Obama's campaign for presidency tag like was that he'd bring us "The Change We Need." He promised there would be no cuts in health care and that we would provide health insurance coverage for millions of more Americans. However, now that the US budget is a huge challenge, he's signed legislation that can cut up to 2% per...

Dr. Len and Nurse Vicki discuss the pros and cons for a routine colonoscopy for colon cancer screening. In asymptomatic people without a family history of cancer, the risks of doing a colonoscopy may exceed the benefits. Bowel perforations and severe GI bleeding are complications in 1 in 200 tests. Other screening tests are reviewed too.

Despite a lot of excitement about aspirin, scientists can't seem to agree on whether it helps healthy people live longer and suffer from fewer heart attacks and strokes. Published studies in the mainstream medical journals on the same nine studies included in a metaanalysis differ. The study published by the Bayer Aspirin people showed a benefit. The study...

Cholesterol binding proteins bind and transport cholesterol within the cell much like lipoproteins carry it in the blood stream. When the receptor sites for cholesterol in the cell are left vacant because cholesterol levels are too low, cell growth is increased. Could this be part of the reason why statins have an increased all cause mortality when...

Is the fat in milk put us at risk for arteriosclerosis, or does it reduce the risk. It depends on which information you believe. The pros and cons of milk consumption are discussed. Milk sensitivity, lactose intolerance, and milk allergy are discussed.

MDs do not discuss all the side effects of medications; there is simply not enough time and they are trained to recommend drugs as the primary treatment for illness. And, Big Pharma does not disclose all side effects.

Exercise works at least as well as antidepressants for depression. The side effects of exercise are good for us; the side effects of SSRI antidepressants can be serious. The long term effects of exercise are superior to drug therapy.

Exercise is especially critical in the elderly. As we lose our youth it becomes easier to lose our strength and fitness. Walking 3 days a week does a lot to support healthy aging, better mood, and mental acuity.

Moderate exercise helps ease depression in patients with chronic congestive heart failure (CHF) and is also associated with a small reduction in death and hospitalizations. Even the failing heart can be strengthened by exercise as measured by peak oxygen consumption and longer duration of exercise that is done carefully under the supervision of a qualified...

The FDA has officially linked all statins with cognitive problems like forgetfullness and confusion as well as with a 25% increased risk for an elevated blood sugar level and possible association with type 2 diabetes. Statins are the best selling drugs on the market and are used by 21 million people in the US each year. Of course, there are all the other side...

Treatment to increase HDL cholesterol has been viewed as useful, but new data published in the journal Lancet in May of 2012, suggests that there's no value in doing so to prevent heart attacks. It could be that HDL is a marker for increased risk for heart attack, much like the PSA is a marker for prostate cancer. This does not mean that statin...
