Legumes are the Key to Iron Absorption

submitted by: admin on 10/09/2013
According to a study in the Journal of Nutrition, iron absorption is best from plant ferritin, which contains a thousand iron molecules rather than just single molecules found in iron supplements. Iron supplements often have GI side effects and can harm the lining of the GI tract. Ferritin is absorbed as an entire molecule.

Lowering Cholesterol: What Does it Do?

submitted by: admin on 11/22/2024
Lowering cholesterol is not directly correlated to stopping arteriosclerosis and extending life. Inflammation is the cause and should be the primary target. Statins have serious side effects but have value in some people. Berberine causes more cholesterol receptor to form that bind with cholesterol and thereby lower its levels.

Managing Pain Without Drugs

submitted by: admin on 10/10/2013
Dr. Len and Nurse Vicki provide an extensive overview of pain management from the mainstream perspective and from that of complementary and alternative therapies. All drugs, even the over the counter medications, used for pain management have potential serious effects. So they are not ideal. Complications of NSAIDs are massive and should be taken off the market.

MDs Too Quick to Reach for Prescription Pads

submitted by: admin on 10/11/2013
US doctors are too quick to reach for their prescription pads according to the Center for Patient Safety Research and Practice. Half of all Americans took at least one prescription drug during the previous month and 1/3 of all people over 60 take five or more drugs! MDs also tend to use the latest and greatest pills rather than those that have been time tested....

Medication Errors in the Elderly

Many elderly patients are vulnerable to serious medication errors. Elderly patients take 4-6 medications on a daily basis. The interreactions are unknown and side effects are expected, especially when taken in combination.

More Polypill Baloney

submitted by: admin on 10/11/2013
The polypill is the most ridiculous idea I've come across in years. It is designed to contain Norvasc, Cozaar, hydrochlorothiazide, and Zocor and is recommended for people over the age of 50 as prophylaxis for cardiovascular disease. It could be purchased over the counter and without seeing a physician! The study done to justify this position...

Nutrients that Improve Memory in Alzheimer's Disease

submitted by: admin on 05/24/2016
MIT studies have shown that a combination of choline, uridine, and DHA can improve memory in patients with early Alzheimer's disease by stimulating the growth of new synapses. About 40% of patients who consumed this cocktail improved on a test of verbal memory. It does not work on moderate or severe cases. There are several other approaches...

submitted by: admin on 02/18/2015
Patients with diabetes who've had a previous heart attack have an 84% lower incidence of dangerous ventricular arrhythmias and 72% lower risk of a fatal heart attack if they use omega 3 fatty acids than those only on drug protection. One thousand patients were followed for 40 months and included those between the ages of 60 and 80. They were given...

Placebo is as effective as drugs to prevent migranes in kids

submitted by: admin on 10/14/2013
According to an article published in the January issue of the journal, Pediatrics, placebo is as effective as drugs in preventing migraine headaches in children. Only two drugs, Topamax and trazadone, worked better than placebo, and the very minimal benefits were not worth the risks from side effects.  The benefit of placebo was a reduction...

Shocking Effects of Taking an Occasional Sleeping Pill

submitted by: admin on 05/28/2014
Sleeping pills are not safe for anyone! Not for people with congestive heart failure (CHF), and not for healthy adults with insomnia. We are not talking about minor issues; we're talking about problems leading to hospital re-admissions, death, or an increased risk for developing cancer! According to information presented in May of 2014 at the...

Should Big Pharma be Protected Against Law Suits for Unlabeled Side Effects?

submitted by: admin on 10/14/2013
In 2011 there was a US Supreme Court ruling that pharmaceutical companies making drugs during the life of their patent are liable for inadequate safety warnings on the label of the drug. In June of 2013 the same court ruled that generic drug producers were NOT liable for law suits related to adverse drug reactions not printed on the label so long as...

Should Statins Be Sold Over the Counter?

submitted by: admin on 10/14/2013
Merck wants to make Mevacor an over the counter drug. This would no doubt sell more drug, but also be giving a dangerous drug to people who do not need it. Its side effects are dangerous.

Side Effects of Medications

submitted by: admin on 04/12/2015
If you're going to take a medicine, it is also important to ask about side effects. MDs have a tendency to recommend a drug and not emphasize the possible side effects because it is not practical; there are just too many. If MDs disclosed all the complications of medications people would not want them; they'd be far more interested in lifestyle...

SSRI Antidepressants, Aspirin, and NSAIDs Increase Bleeding

submitted by: admin on 11/22/2024
Combining SSRI antidepressants with aspirin or other NSAIDs can lead to a 42% increase risk for bleeding. SSRIs may inhibit the uptake and storage of serotonin by platelets. Low platelet serotonin leads to reduced platelet aggregation and a tendency to bleed. Considering that SSRIs have little evidence that they work better than placebo and that...
