The American College of Physicians is creating guidelines to control overtesting and overtreatment. They estimate we spend $250 billion in unnecessary tests every year. Some of the reason is that MDs feel they need to practice defensive medicine, but there are also conflicts of interest related to investments they have made in purchasing medical testing equipment....

Health care costs are no longer affordable. We have a model based on getting sick rather than on staying well. This is a failed system: half of us have a chronic disease, the system is not safe, and we cannot afford to sustain it.

Foods can be addictive and a key reason for pediatric obesity is related to high calorie, low fiber diets that promote changes in hormones. Sugar addiction underlies many of the hormonal changes that lead to the metabolic syndrome.

The cost of health care is highest in the last year of life. This is a difficult issue as the question is where can money be spent the best. We spend 50% of all health care dollars in the last year of life. This is discussed.

Exercise injuries are preventable. Overdoing exercise or being the weekend warrior are recipes for injuries. Getting in shape, stretching, and starting slowly are protective.
